The Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a home-away-from-home and other support services for critically ill children and their families. Through a partnership with VCU Health and the Child Development Center, The Ronald McDonald House Sibling Center is located in the Children’s Pavilion at VCU. The Sibling Center is a place for parents to check in their well-siblings in order to focus on the care of the patient. We are looking for dedicated, adult volunteers to engage siblings checked into the Sibling Center with age appropriate activities. The Ronald McDonald House Sibling Center will be open during daytime hours on Monday through Friday so weekday day time availability is required.
Welcome children to the Sibling Center and engage them in age-appropriate activities. Activities might include talking, listening, reading, art, games, and comforting/rocking. Volunteers may also assist by organizing materials, stocking supplies for activities, and cleaning up after activities.
Impact and Outcomes:
This is a hands-on opportunity that allows volunteers to engage with siblings of patients receiving care at the Children’s Pavilion at VCU. You help the sibling to be engaged with age-appropriate activities while allowing the parent focus solely on the patient.
Training and Support: (general orientation is covered by Volunteer Services)
Orientation to the Sibling Center and training for the role will be provided by Sibling Center team members.
Volunteers must commit to a weekly three-hour shift Monday-Friday from 9-12 or 12-3.
Must have a caring attitude and the ability to work patiently with a variety of ages. Must be comfortable interacting with children ages 3-14 years (most participants will be 3-8 years old). Must be able to communicate well with children and adults. Prior experience with children, personally or professionally, is preferred.
