This is a great opportunity to enhance your resume and help a great cause.

Building Families First Community Organization (BFFCO) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3). The organization was developed in 2008 to bring attention to the cycle of poverty and on-going housing disposition that was, and is still occurring in the Detroit, Michigan region. The purpose of the Neighborhood Revitalization division and Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program with underlying services, is to assist and encourage families into upward mobility so they may take ownership of their lives and adopt financially responsible behavior, become home owners, and independent from governmental assistance. We have assisted over 3,000 individuals thus far with housing, employment, food and medical insurance.

Our primary market is focused on individuals and families who are able-bodied and are receiving Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers. Our key partners include MSHDA and HUD approved housing counseling agencies and lenders. Our partners are industry-specific architects, attorneys, accountants, community agencies, colleges and universities to leverage existing community resources and expertise.

Our solution is to build partnerships with agencies and communities to acquire blighted property and to create a community plan that will mobilize efforts to fight blight, poverty and inequalities, while increasing public safety, fostering greater home ownership, and building stronger neighborhood organizations to strengthen the stability of the neighborhood

Description

Building Families First Community Organization (BFFCO) is a 501c3 nonprofit that encourages families to take ownership of their lives and adopt financially responsible behavior, while becoming independent of governmental assistance

BFFCO goal is to once again see public housing and housing assistance (Section 8), utilized as the transitional or temporary resources it was originally intended to be. We believe that public housing was never intended to become a permanent home and we should discourage that perception from the becoming the status quo for the families currently receiving housing assistance. Another goal of the program, particularly in light of recent Welfare to Work initiatives, is to "break the cycle of poverty" that still exists among many of our public housing residents.

It is the expressed purposes of the BFFCO Family Self-Sufficiency Program to assist low-income families achieve the American dream of true upward mobility.
