This position reports to the CIO of Pacific Battleship Center, and is responsible for the design,development, and test of primarily web based application functionality and web services handling both internal business processes and publicly facing museum interactive experiences. An ideal candidate will have a web development background and experience with a python framework such as Django and/or Flask. In addition, competency with the UNIX/Linux will be essential; while windows system experience is desirable, it is not required. Some experience with relational database or relational modeling would be a bonus. A love of tinkering with electronics would just be icing on the cake.

This position will be part of a small team of highly skilled and dedicated volunteers from across the technology industry. Together we are building some very innovative solutions surrounding automation and monitoring of the unique environment provided aboard the Battleship Iowa. A sampling of currently open projects includes:

  • Building a web service infrastructure to remotely monitor and control video playback throughout the ship and through various museum displays.
  • Integrating alarm components, cameras, and microphones to allow remote monitoring of areas of the ship and to monitor crowd movement and dwell time(s).
  • Salesforce integration with the ticketing and membership systems.
  • Web based inventory control system(s)
  • Trouble ticketing and workflow management
  • Interactive Museum displays on Naval Gunnery (including the potential of interfacing with a Mark 1A electro mechanical analog fire control computer
  • Interactive radio room displays including streaming audio and interfacing with 1940’s teletype and radio equipment.


This position will interact with the Salesforce Python API, the Google Apps Python API, as well as Django (or Flask) and will be primarily creating new technology from scratch. In addition, there are some unique opportunities to interface with some very old and unique equipment.

Processing and Training:

New volunteers are paired with a Sponsor on their first day and are expected to attend a one day orientation class offered each month. Departmental training is provided through one-on-one mentorship.

Pacific Battleship Cen ter is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the last of the great battleships and the one to define her class, the Battleship IOWA BB-61. The IOWA is a floating museum on the LA waterfront. Our guests experience the battleship in a variety of ways including tours, special events, concerts, parties and promotions, as well as exciting educational programs. We are open seven days a week.

The Battleship IOWA crew comes from a variety of backgrounds including maritime, military, business, attraction, non-profit, arts, technology, hospitality, construction, and other trades. Through the unique melding of these skills, the crew has become a dynamic and efficient team that works to provide our guests an authentic American experience. We celebrate the American Spirit daily by bringing the Battleship IOWA alive for guests of all ages to enjoy.
