At The Sankofa Center we empower people to change lives and foster healthy behaviors to prevent, detect, and treat HIV/AIDS. We do this through utilizing traditional African dance & drama fused with health information to educate people of all ages in Ghana. We are committed to providing free counseling, rapid HIV/AIDS testing and connecting people with HIV/AIDS to local medical resources. We value equipping the next generation with tools to wipe out HIV/AIDS with a compassionate and open-minded ethos. Since 2004 we have educated 35,000 students about HIV prevention, 50,000 community members on HIV transmission, and have provided over 4,000 individuals with free rapid HIV testing with links to care

Our goal is to become a self-sustaining outreach program & the organization has developed a fair-trade product line made by the cooperative in Ghana - sold in the U.S. through various wholesale & retail trade channels. Additionally, since 2005 the org has hosted a vibrant volunteer/internship program in which over 100 western interns have visited Africa to volunteer in the field. Both of these initiatives require a better web presence to help us increase our impact. Therefore, the organization is seeking a mobile developer to work aside our team of graphic designers to develop a mobile interface that mirrors the standard representing our impact to foster growth.

Description

Sankofa is an ancient African proverb symbolized by a bird looking backwards. It asks people to revisit their past in order to correct the mistakes that may affect their future. The Sankofa Center uses the dance and music of Africa’s past to foster a healthier future and a better understanding of HIV/AIDS.

.

The Sankofa Center’s programming is two-fold: touring dance-dramas are aimed at educating margainalized villagers with little access to resources and information; after-school programs target youth between the ages of 13-19+.

The Sankofa Center also conducts classroom educational seminars, provides free on-the spot rapid testing, and links women, men, and youth to treatment. We have reached over 47,000 villagers and 35,000 students since 2006.
