Would you like to make a difference in the historical collections, photos, and memories housed at the Yolo County Archives?
We need people like you, history lovers and skilled volunteers, to assist the Yolo County Archives with our DIY (Discover It Yourself) History Project! This project will create a new platform for discovery and learning while increasing access for our community members and invite new patrons to engage in our materials. Our unique collection of rich history, which includes WWII letters, obituaries, water rights data and more, is waiting to be carefully handled and enjoyed!
We need assistance in a variety of areas including: digitizing photos, transcribing materials, creating descriptions, performing batch uploading and beta testing to a website, entering data in Omeka (an open source software devoted to public participation) and reaching out to the community.
We are looking for volunteers or intern candidates that have an eye for detail and wish to be more involved with their history. Volunteers should be comfortable with Excel, Access and have a willingness to learn how to navigate Omeka. Other desirable traits include taking instruction and training, ability to read detailed information, type precise information into appropriate categories with sufficient speed and accuracy, work well with others or alone, and have sufficient communication and feedback skills. Volunteers will need to prioritize and work quickly to extract appropriate details from the records that will help other volunteers and researchers in connecting with collecting materials.
Most of the work will be done at the Yolo County Archives in Woodland, CA. There will be Library staff and other volunteers working alongside you in this project as well as a support network for questions or direction. We will also have an on-site orientation with all our volunteers to discuss duties, interests, and time commitments as well as show you this amazing project in person. We hope to hear from you soon for this exciting and dedicated project!
Those interested in being a volunteer can apply through this site or contact Jenny Tan at: 530-666-8001 or jenny.tan@yolocounty.org.
