SELF is offering a STEM afterschool progran at the Southside Boys and Girls Club. We cover various topics which include environmental science, Nanoscience and technology, engineering, robotics, math, biology, chemistry, physics, programming. The program will focus on elementary and middle school aged children, but we will be training older students to help in the sessions. Currently we are preparing to growi our own garden and studying the science of food.
SELF is looking for someone to assist in classes one night per week, Tuesdays, for 2 hours. Classes run from 3:00 - 5:00, with time allowed for set up and clean up before and after.
This is a fantastic way to make a huge impact on these underserved children for with only a smal amount of time each week.
There will be intital training required for volunteers and a background check is required by Boys and Girls Club. We can set this up as a shared volunteer opportunity if you are unable to hlep every week or for the full two hours.

Description
SELF International, a nonprofit educational organization based in Minneapolis, MN, serves as a magnet for gathering students, communities, teachers, other academics, professionals in STEM, and organizations together to give underserved students and their families equal access and opportunities for out-of-school learning. We meet the students in their neighborhoods and schools, eliminating the need for transportation to other venues. We offer free programs because nearly all of the people in our programs fall into the lowest income brackets. We will bring high quality materials and resources. Mentors from STEM fields meet with students and introduce them to new options and possibilities for their future. Students learn that science is everywhere and discover its relevance to their own lives. Students and families develop a science identity helping them feel more connected to science and build a culture of learning in their families and communities. Students gain confidence in their ability to pursue STEM. Through hands-on activities and personal experiences in cutting edge science and technology students discover that learning is fun and creative. Students’ curiosity and questions guide them into new ideas and subjects. They make connections they had never noticed or considered before. STEM will not be merely a word to our students, it will contain a whole world of exciting possibilities. Students will carry this interest and excitement for learning to their school classes, and the achievement gap will be lowered.
