ORGANIZATION: Brunswick Area Historical Society

Collections Assistants will work with the Heritage Farm Museum’s Curator and other members of the Brunswick Area Historical Society to document and store objects acquired for the organization’s permanent collection. With an attention to detail and enthusiasm for history, Collections Assistants will actively contribute to ongoing efforts to preserve and display Brunswick’s local history. This is an excellent volunteer opportunity for students or professionals in history or related fields seeking hands-on experience in a museum environment.

Qualifications

Collections Assistants must:

  • Have an interest in history and historical objects.
  • Have the ability to learn the museum’s system for cataloguing objects.
  • Be detail-oriented, organized, and efficient.
  • Use good written and oral communication skills.
  • Be able to carefully handle objects of varying conditions and weights.
  • Some museum, archive, or library experience is a plus, but not required.

Commitment

Collections Assistants must:

  • Attend a training for the museum’s cataloguing system.
  • Commit to a regular schedule to be arranged with supervisors.
  • Commit for the duration of a project, with opportunities for further involvement after its successful completion.
  • Communicate with supervisors and Brunswick Area Historical Society officers in a timely and attentive manner about the status of projects.
