Seed Collectors will be responsible for collecting one or two specific prairie species in the UW-Whitewater nature preserve. Individuals will be trained on identifying the plant, determining if it is ready for harvest, and how to harvest it. Volunteers will work alone or in teams of two, depending on preference and quantity of seed needed for collection. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather and long sleeve shirt and long pants to protect skin from plants and insects. Meet at the Prairie Information Kiosk on Schwager Road. Coordinates listed in street address.
Tools and basic gloves are available in a limited supply, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools and gear. Volunteers choosing to work alone can listen to headphones if desired. All training is provided, including plant identification, location, and harvesting method.
Please email sustainability@uww.edu if you are interested in this event to sign up for our email list, which includes timely updates for changes in our volunteer schedule and a regular newsletter featuring different volunteer activities, spotlights on our volunteers, and upcoming opportunties.
