This position REQUIRES that you be in New York City or in Northern New Jersey. This position also is open to college graduates who are looking to acquire bookkeeping and accountant experience with nonprofit organizations. This position may lead to a paid position. You must already have working bookkeeping experience and are using this opportunity to transfer your skills from a for-profit entity to a nonprofit, in order to become qualified to work in a nonprofit entity. This position is NOT a training position, and you must have a mastery in Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, know how to debit and credit, and understand the basics of chart of accounts, so that you can categorize our transactions into the proper chart of accounts. Again, if you are a student or if you live outside of New York City or Northern New Jersey, please do not apply.
Come contribute your accounting and bookkeeping expertise to an up and coming startup nonprofit that provides STEM programs to underrepresented students in the New York City and Northern New Jersey communities. We launched in August 2015 and received our tax exempt status in November 2015. We have already received one grant and will be pursuing additional grant funding.
We have begun to receive income from schools and agencies, so we'll need to work fast to stay on top of the books! In addition, there was income realized in 2015, so we'll need to generate financials and tax prep files to send to the IRS before the deadline.
We are also looking for someone to help prepare payroll for one employee. What we'll really need is for the accounting partner to advise on how to submit payroll taxes. Once that is done, we can do this part in house on a monthly/quarterly basis.
We will need our partner to produce financial statements and ensure that accounting entries for our very minimal transactions are booked to the right chart of accounts. Further, our partner will reconcile the company's bank statements and advise us how to treat our income, be it from donations, grants, or receipts from schools and agencies.
Lastly, we are looking for our partner to, well, partner with us by sharing with the Executive Director on any anomalies with the accounting processes that may occur throughout the month and providing any analysis of the transactions that are warranted.
