Volunteer helping teach a lab user Facebook
Volunteer helps teach a lab user to use Facebook using the assistive technology ZoomText.

We are looking for more volunteer lab monitors to join our team. These volunteers sit at the front desk greeting visitors, registering new lab users, and answering questions. Hours are flexible between 1pm-6pm, Monday to Friday. We look for volunteers who are friendly and enthusiastic about helping others, have knowledge of basic computer programs, and who are comfortable interacting with all kinds of people. Experience working with assisstive software like ZoomText,NVDA and JAWS a plus!

The STAR Center (which stands for Special Technology Access Resource) is a free, public computer lab located in south central Seattle. We are passionate about digital equity and making computers and the Internet accessible to all regardless of income, disability, and education level. We offer training and assistance in basic computer functions and in several accessibility softwares for computer users who are low vision, blind, or have limited mobility.

The STAR Center is dedicated to providing free computer and Internet access for people of widely varying abilities and disabilities by offering high quality equipment, accessibility software, and training and support in a community environment.

Description

The STAR Center is a place where individuals from underserved populations can come and access computers and the Internet, as well as receive referrals for assistance to maintain and advance their independence and quality of life through technology. We are located next door to a Seattle Housing Authority low income housing apartment highrise designated for ADA accessibility and serve residents of this building as well as members of the Seattle public. We offer free, bi-monthly computer class and additional training on assistive technology by appointment.
