Does your pet have that something special? Our patients would love to have visit with your pet! No bones about it; pets touch lives in special ways - and volunteering offers many rewards! Research has shown that pet visits can sometimes reach a patient in ways that no human being can.

Opportunity Description:

Near the end of life, most people want comfort, dignity and a sense of normalcy. And for many people, nothing delivers all three like an animal companion. Vitas Paw Pals are volunteer teams comprising a human - like you - and a pet - like yours! Together these valiant volunteers visit hospice patients and families in their private homes, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, or inpatient units.

Paw Pals can offer that extra support which only friendly furry, feathered or hoofed friends can provide to terminally ill patients and their families. A VITAS Paw Pal team can bring back positive memories of his or her own pet, encourage activity and provide unconditional love and comfort to our hospice patients. Dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals (upon approval) can be considered.

Requirements
Pet must be at least one- year old.
Pet must have up-to-date health records.
Pet must have completed obedience training; or be screened by the basic screening questions of the Canine Good Citizen Program. (this can be done on site at VITAS).

A Paw Pal Volunteer is considered a Patient Care Volunteer. Volunteer is required to complete a background screening, fingerprint, and TB test. VITAS covers the cost of these.
