Team Developement Chair:

Time Commitment: Lead 1-3 60 minute meetings per month (March-November), as well as 5-20 hours of volunteering a month.

Position Responsibilites:

  • Recruit a Team Retention Chair (past teams), Team Recruitment Chair (new teams), and Online Chair to assist in reaching the team recruitment goal and development of team fundraising initiatives.

  • Work closely with the Event Chair, Income Vice Chair, and Society staff to develop and implement a plan to set and achieve team recruitment goals.

  • Ensure all committee chairs and sub-committee members participate in position-specific training.

  • Become an expert of the Team Development materials and resources available.

  • Set a schedule for subcommittee meetings and lead productive, results-oriented meetings.

  • Maintain frequent contact with committee members to ensure successful recruitment and meet benchmarks.

  • Thank volunteers and team captains and ensure that appropriate recognition activities take place.

  • Ensure all Team Leaders feel informed, equipped, and empowered to be successful in their role. Specifically:

  • Educate team captains about the registration processes (online and offline).

  • Provide team captains with Team Leader Kits, meeting schedules, fundraising tools, important websites, committee contact information, and other Team Leader tools. Take time to orient them to these resources.

  • Communicate regularly with Team Leaders through face-to-face interactions, phone calls, letters, email, social media, and text messages as appropriate.

  • Work with the Online Chair to ensure the event website is up-to-date with information that is critical for Team Leaders and team members.

  • Encourage Team Leaders to attend kickoffs, Team Leader meetings/rallies, fundraising trainings, and wrap-up meetings. Make reminder calls before each event to improve attendance.

  • Work with the online chair, sponsorship chair, and other committee members to host a special fundraising training (e.g. Team Leader University or Fundraising Workshop) outside of regularly scheduled Team Leader meetings.

  • Provide team captains with day-of-event details regarding parking, main event area set-up, site maintenance, site clean-up, schedule of events, etc.

  • Employ creative, engaging, and personal strategies to mentor teams.

  • Serve as the primary point-of-contact for all of your Team Leader contacts at the Making Strides event, and be available to manage team problems and/or concerns.

  • Assist with team recruitment by utilizing your personal sphere of influence as well as the network you encounter through your committee position.

  • Assist with identifying appropriate person for succession of your position.

What is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer?

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities with a shared determination to finish the fight against breast cancer. Passionate walk participants raise critical funds that enable the American Cancer Society to fund groundbreaking breast cancer research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it is most treatable.
