Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod & the Islands

The role of Big Brother or Big Sister is simply to be an adult friend to a child who could do with another caring adult in their life. This elementary school-based program is offered in conjunction with M.E. Small Elementary School in West. Yarmouth.

Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their Littles at the child's school during the lunch break. The "match" - a one-to-one friendship between an adult and a child of the same gender - gets together weekly for the whole school year to talk, play games, shoot hoops or just hang out.

Because positive outcomes result from long-term friendships, we ask that volunteers "Bigs" commit to spending at least the full school year with their Little. There is no set curriculum. The agency provides professional support to the family, the child and the volunteer to make sure the friendship grows and deepens and that any bumps in the road are overcome.

Mission Statement

The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands is to partner with under-resourced families to provide their children with transformational, one-to-one professionally-supported relationships with caring adult mentors, so that their children will thrive.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands, a proud member of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay family, is the only one-to-one youth mentoring organization serving Cape Cod and the Islands. Our program is proven to produce several positive long-term and short-term youth development outcomes. Research shows that a match of just one year helps kids stay in school, avoid violent and risky behavior, and gain confidence.

Youth involved in our program become more adept at having quality relationships with adults, which contributes to their abilities to advocate for themselves throughout life.
