The role of Big Brother or Big Sister is simply to be an adult friend to a child who could do with another caring adult in their life. This school-based program is offered in conjunction with Quashnet Elementary in Masphee.
Adult volunteers (Big Brothers and Big Sisters) meet with their Littles at the child's school - either during the lunch break or after school. The "match" - a one-to-one friendship between an adult and a child of the same gender - gets together weekly for the whole school year to talk, play games, shoot hoops, or just hang out.
Because positive outcomes result from long-term friendships, we ask that volunteers, or "Bigs", commit to spending at least the full school year with their Little. There is no set curriculum. The agency provides professional support to the family, the child and the volunteer to make sure the friendship grows and deepens and that any bumps in the road are overcome.
