ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Minnesota Dakotas Region

PLACEMENT PURPOSE
The American Red Cross launched the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign (HFPC) in October 2014, with the goal to reduce the rate of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 over 5 years. Its strategy includes participating in a community coalition that targets neighborhoods at-risk for home fires, installs and tests smoke alarms, and provides fire safety and disaster preparedness education/planning. As a Red Cross Home Fire Preparedness Campaign General Volunteer, there are a variety of roles to choose from based on your skills/interests and the needs of each campaign event. Canvassing Volunteers go door-to-door in a targeted area to notify residents of an upcoming, smoke alarm installation rally in their area. Home-Visit Teams consist of Smoke Alarm Installers, Safety Educators, and Documenters; together, they go into homes to test existing smoke alarms and install free new alarms as needed, educate the household about fire safety, and ensure accurate documentation of services delivered (respectively). General volunteers may also assist Campaign Event Leads with administrative tasks to ensure a smooth installation event.
