ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Cascades Region

PLACEMENT PURPOSE
The American Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) is launching the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign (HFPC) in October 2014. Its goal is to reduce the rate of deaths and injuries due to home fires by 25 percent over 5 years. Its strategy includes participating in a community coalition that targets neighborhoods at-risk for home fires; installs and tests smoke alarms; and provides fire safety and disaster preparedness education/planning. This position exists primarily to train for one of three positions: Safety Educator, Smoke Alarm Installer and Documenter.

OPEN TIME DAYS

Events take place throughout the year in various cities and towns in the region.⦆ Each event is generally 6-8 hours long.

Installation teams can also be formed and teams go out to install alams for community members who have been given an appointment.⦆ The time commitment on this varies.

REQUIRED TRAINING
  • Orientation to American Red Cross
  • Disaster Services: An Overview (optional)
  • HFPC Guidance and Training: Safety for Home Visits, Smoke Alarm Installation, and
    other required training.
