What we do:For many Special Olympics Athletes, dental care is not often a priority and can take a back seat to more pressing medical care. Special Smiles, a dental screening program which is part of the overall Healthy Athletes Program was designed to screen athletes with intellectual disabilities while at the same time increase the number of dental professionals who will serve people with intellectual disabilities in their practices and clinics. Non-intrusive screening stations:

  1. Assessment of decay, unstable fillings and sealants, injury, fluorosis, and gingival signs
  2. Fluoride treatment
  3. Oral health education
  4. Written report card and referral
