An adorable little girl reading one of our books!

Did you know more than 60% of low-income children have no age-appropriate books at home? Bright Star Books works to end this book ownership gap by collecting new and gently used children’s books, and getting them to limited-resource families in Greater Akron.

But collecting tens of thousands of books donated throughout Summit County is a big effort, and we need your help! Bright Star Books is looking for individuals to serve as Liaisons to our Collection Constellation, a group of small businesses that partner with BSB to act as permanent children’s book donation sites.

Many of these locations are huge on generosity but short on space, so our goal is make sure that books donated to BSB never become a burden on these businesses.

Bright Star Books Liaisons will be in charge of checking in with our partner businesses every few weeks, and picking up donated books whenever requested. You may also occasionally have to store the books for a few days before we can arrange a drop off at BSB headquarters.

You will be a critical part of the pipeline moving books from families that have outgrown them to the children who need them most!

Mission Statement

Mission:

The mission of Bright Star Books, Inc. is to promote a culture of reading by increasing access to and ownership of books for limited-resource children in the Greater Akron region. We aim to do this at the earliest possible age to ensure children grow up habituated to the potential of books as sources of learning and joy.

Vision:

Bright Star Books aims to compliment and collaborate with existing early childhood development and literacy organizations in the Greater Akron region to build a sustainable community network that brings books into the homes of limited-resource children and gives every family the chance to develop a lasting love of reading and learning. Utilizing the latest developmental research, and embracing a model where community participation, capacity building, and research are critical, we seek to identify and fill gaps in existing programs so that every child - regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic status or cultural capital - has the resources needed to grow up in an environment where developing a love for reading is possible.

Description

Bright Star Books gives books these ways:

-We build libraries in transitional housing shelters, so young children displaced by poverty or violence can still experience the joy of reading;

-We give childrenʼs libraries to teen mothers with limited access to books;

-We partner with service agencies like the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) of Summit County to distribute gently used, developmentally appropriate childrenʼs books through their clinics, serving thousands of low-income women and children from pregnancy to age five.
