FIRST LEGO League Competitions are fun!

Y

The Northern California FIRST Lego League (FLL) program is seeking volunteers for upcoming Championship tournaments. This STEM program develops critical skills in science and technology in a super-charged learning atmosphere. The competition involves teams of students, ages 9 to 14.

You do not have to be an engineer or STEM professional to be a judge or other volunteer. We do need people that are encouraging, approachable and friendly towards young people. All volunteers need to apply through the FIRST website and all adults must pass a background screening - detailed sign up instructions available at https://www.norcalfll.org/volunteer/ .

This year, teams from around Northern California will be inspired to learn more about SPACE and propose innovative solutions to enable space exploration (related to this year's theme -- Into Orbit). The teams design, build, program and test an autonomous LEGO Mindstorms robot engineered to solve challenges that relate to problems developed by experts in the field. In addition, the teams learn about and create an innovative project solution that focuses on a relevant issue. Students acquire skills such as problem solving, project management, critical thinking and teamwork: skills necessary to their future and the future of society.

Playing At Learning, a local nonprofit, is coordinating volunteers for Northern California robotics tournaments. All tournaments need volunteers with a particular need for adult judges. Good, online, self-paced training material for judges is available. We have many other roles available for high school students as well.

Time Commitment varies per role.

For judges specifically, 7:30am - 1:00 pm for Round 1 judges (likely will finish earlier)
11:30am - 5:30pm for Round 2 judges (likely will finish earlier - but would like to encourage you to stay for award ceremony)
