About the National Trust

The National Trust is a charity that looks after special places - for ever, for everyone. And we’re as much about people as the places in our care. We run a vast retail chain and a 151-strong outlet catering business. And because most of the work we do is affected by wider global issues, our interests extend far beyond just bricks, mortar and land in our care. We speak up on big issues affecting the coast, countryside and heritage. And all the while we’re welcoming around 19 million visitors a year. It’s a quite a task. Our places are open to all and we thrive by involving as many people as possible in what we do. That’s really important to us.

About Petworth House and Park

Petworth House and Park has historically been described as 'a house of art’, it is overflowing with paintings and sculptures and offers an enticing glimpse of domestic life but that’s not all we have to offer. Outside there is 50 acres of Pleasure Grounds full of wildflowers and a 700 acre park where deer roam free. Our Park and Pleasure Grounds offer a unique opportunity for our visitors to immerse themselves in one of England’s most beautiful landscapes, which has inspired many, including artists for centuries.

Mission Statement

The National Trust was founded in 1895 to promote and look after places of historic beauty permanently for the benefit of the nation across England, Wales and Northern Island. Our core purpose is to look after special places for ever, for everyone.

Description

A stately mansion nestled in the South Downs housing the finest art collection in the care of the National Trust.

Petworth has a rich and varied history waiting to be discovered. Stroll through state rooms saturated with internationally important paintings by artists such as Van Dyck, Reynolds, Titian and Blake together with classical and neo-classical sculptures. Follow in the footsteps of JMW Turner who spent long periods at the mansion under the patronage of the 3rd Earl of Egremont, and whose paintings of Petworth park can be seen at Petworth today.

The servants’ quarters by contrast offer a glimpse of life 'below stairs’. Step inside some of these rooms and imagine the hustle and bustle of servant life.

The landscape gives every impression of being totally natural but in reality nothing is further from the truth. The park was transformed in the 1750s and early 1760s by Lancelot 'Capability’ Brown.
