Adopt a Spot

Do you have an interest in ornamental gardening and beautifying your environment? The City of Orem Department of Public Works would like to invite you to participate in the "Adopt a Spot" program available within your community.

What is "Adopt a Spot"? It is a program where a volunteer assists in caring for a flower bed in the park system.

Who can adopt a spot? Any individual or group may participate.

Why participate? Our mission is to help our fellow citizens build and preserve a community in which we all want to live. Whether you choose to work individually or in a group setting, your efforts are appreciated and will contribute to the beautification of your community.

When is the adoption period? The adoption period is from March through November of each calendar year.

What is the time commitment? It depends on the size of the bed. A minimum of two bed visits per month is all that is required. Many adopters check on their spots while picnicking in the area or while taking a leisurely stroll through the park. You can work at your own pace and choose a schedule that best suits you.

How do I care for my bed? Tasks include planting, weeding, and deadheading flowers. Plant material and training will be provided by Orem parks staff.

What will I get for my efforts? Participants will have their name listed on the "Adopt a Spot" section of the Orem website. Photo submissions from adopters are encouraged. A sign will also be placed in your bed to recognize your efforts.

How much does it cost? Participation is free. The Orem Department of Public Works will provide the plant material and signs for each bed. Donations are always welcome.

Where are the beds located?
Cascade Park (1 bed)
Cherryhill Park (2 beds)
City Center Courtyard (2 beds)
Foothill Park (5 beds)
Orem Library (1 bed)
Scera Park (5 beds)
Sharon Park (2 beds)
Fitness Center (2 beds)
Nielsen's Grove (20 beds)

How do I sign up? For an application, please send an email request to lrbascom@orem.org.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to help our fellow citizens build and preserve a community in which we all want to live.

Description

As you drive around the City of Orem, it is quite apparent that we live in a very beautiful area. Employees citywide take great pride in maintaining this wonderful community. The City's mission is to "help our fellow citizens build and preserve a community in which we all want to live." In this community, we benefit from many amenities that residents of all ages enjoy. We also have a very high standard of living where we feel safe and free to pursue the pleasures of life. Many of the services that Public Works provides contribute directly to this end. Through your willingness to support high quality parks, playgrounds, ball fields, transportation systems, drinking water systems, water reclamation services, flood control facilities, cemetery, etc., we receive many valuable benefits that enhance our quality of life.

In addition, Public Works staff coordinates the efforts of numerous volunteers who serve on boards, commissions, and committees relevant to services provided by this department. For example, the Metropolitan Water District of Orem Board is comprised of seven residents who work closely with staff to coordinate Orem's long-term water needs and interests. Maintenance Division staff also works closely with the Beautification Advisory Commission to enhance the beauty of the City. The Summerfest Advisory Committee consists of nine volunteers who coordinate with seven fulltime employees representing four departments to plan for this celebration held annually in June. In addition, staff works closely with and/or serves on the Sleepy Ridge Golf Course Commission, Provo River Water Users Association Board, and Central Utah Water Conservancy District Board.

I appreciate the efforts of all those who serve on these boards, commissions, and committees, including representatives from the Orem City Council. They sacrifice many hours providing outstanding community service to the citizens of Orem. Moreover, I would like to thank the Public Works staff for their dedication, professionalism, and service provided to the residents of the City of Orem. Although many outstanding individuals work for this department, they work hard together as a team keeping the customer in mind. Working together, we truly help make Orem a great place to live, work, and play!

Sincerely,

Christopher R. Tschirki

Public Works Director
