English Reading Teaching Assistant

The Volunteer Teaching Assistant would assist the Adult Basic Education English instructor in her Level 2 class. The class meets from 7pm to 8pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The students are all adult learners reading roughly at grade levels 4-8, and they are a mix of native English speakers and second-language English speakers. The goal is to get them to read beyond the 8th grade level, so that they can be prepared for the Level 3 class.

You could be asked to work individually with certain students or to help lead a small group in a reading exercise. The focus could be word pronunciation, vocabulary, reading fluency, or reading comprehension. Each night, the instructor will decide on the groups and the reading focus. Ideally, you would volunteer at least 1 night per week, though we are flexible on schedules.

The English instructor may also need volunteers to individually help students in her Level 1 class. The class meets from 6pm to 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The students are adult learners reading roughly below grade level 4.
