About Audubon Arizona:

A part of the City of Phoenix's Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center sits on a former dump site, now a reclaimed haven for wildlife and over 200 species of birds in an increasingly urbanized metropolitan area. The Center offers everyone the opportunity to connect to nature and to experience the outdoors year round.

Camp Audubon Adventures:

Get wild this summer with Audubon Adventures and experience the exciting world of Sonoran desert wildlife! Audubon Adventures is a week-long, nature and science focused day camp in Phoenix where campers enjoy nature hikes, archery, solar snacks, geocaching, unique activities, and more!

Purpose:

Volunteers are an essential part of Audubon Arizona summer camp. are an essential program of Audubon Arizona. Audubon Arizona offers 6 exciting science, nature, and wildlife themed weeks for ages 8-12 (3 rd-6 th grade). Volunteers will assist with implementing programming, leading students outdoors, and maintaining an environment conducive for learning with campers ages 8-12.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with and prepare for morning set-up
  • Join staff in leading bird walks and other outdoor activities
  • Describe and explain information in ways all age groups can understand
  • Work with co-leaders to provide engaging lessons throughout the day
  • Represent Audubon Arizona in a positive manner by maintaining a positive attitude and delivering excellent guest experiences

Qualifications:

  • Friendly, outgoing personality to interact with students and guests of all ages
  • Comfortable being outdoors, with high heat and inclement weather (outdoor activities mostly occur in the morning)
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Ability to relate skills to others
  • Know, or be willing to learn, various types of fauna, flora, and animals commonly seen at Audubon Arizona
  • Ability to walk a one-mile interpretive trail
  • Must pass background check
  • Must be 18 years of age or older

Description

The Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center is a nature center in the heart of the City of Phoenix's Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area, a 600-acre park along the historic Salt River. Located less than two miles from downtown Phoenix, the Center is a gateway to a lush Sonoran riparian habitat used by over 200 species of birds and other wildlife.

The free admission Center offers interactive exhibits, an interpretive loop trail, connections to the Rio Salado Habitat's sixteen miles of hiking and riding trails and a variety of programs, including beginning birding classes and bird walks, school field trip programs and more. Designed by Weddle Gilmore Architects, the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center is a green building and is expected to be LEED certified. The Center's sustainable features include a photovoltaic system, a waste water recycling system, low water use fixtures, pervious surfaces and bioswales to capture rain and run-off water and energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems.

The Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center is the headquarters of the Arizona state office of the National Audubon Society.
