Do You Speak Another Language Besides English?
AshaKiran is a non-profit organization that focuses on supporting foreign born individuals experiencing crisis/trauma. AshaKiran focuses and supports several areas with confidential direct and indirect services - with one being translation services for those whom, for example, have a language difficulty - a common barrier preventing many to reach out for help. AshaKiran is one of the only emergency shelters in Alabama that provides culturally sensitive support.
Can you imagine going through a crisis in another country and you do not speak the language, have any family support, etc?
Therefore we are always looking for new translators? and/or? lawyers, medical professionals, accountants, etc.? that speak another language? to provide confidential specialized assistance (whether in person, on the phone and/or for documents). We know all too well that schedules can be hectic so we will ALWAYS be growing our AK Volunteer Translator list - ANY language and ANY Availability! You would help as needed so there is no set day or time required to volunteer for this role in order to be more flexible with your schedule while at the same time ensuring that we can assist those foreign born individuals experiencing a crisis.
Here is the process to become an AK volunteer translator:
Simply complete and send back to me the 3 AK volunteer documents (volunteer application & confidentiality docs).
- In the future, we'll have a short one time meet n greet with all of the AK volunteer translators to share info about your role as an AK volunteer translator as well as about AshaKiran and our future plans/events - that's it!
Here is how the process as an AK volunteer translator works:
When we get a call from our 24 HR Crisis AshaLine in which we have a victim that doesn't speak English, once we determine what language they speak, say for example Vietnamese, our AshaLine trained volunteers go to their resource list of AK volunteer translators that speak Vietnamese, and start making calls to those volunteers (based on the availability they included in their AK volunteer application). So, for example you are contacted by an AshaLine volunteer to assist a client and you are not available to help at that time, you'd just respond that you are not able to help presently and then they'll just contact the next volunteer listed. Hopefully you'll be able to help assist the next time we have a foreign born individual in need. Pretty simple, right?
We also are always looking for volunteers that don't speak another language, but want to volunteer their time and/or experience within other areas like social media, marketing, finance, at events, etc. So please let me know if you know of any other people that might want to donate their time and expertise to assist clients with one of our direct and indirect confidential services as there is no minimum amount of time required or anything; one really great thing about AshaKiran is that, due to the domestic violence?/?sexual abuse issues, they keep names & contact info completely confidential (even from other AK volunteers) not only to protect the victims, but also the volunteers as well. However, AK volunteer translators need to be of adult age in order to effectively deal with the sensitive nature/subject matter in which we assist those in need.
