The iBIO Institute EDUCATE Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit has partnered with Waukegan to College, Abbott Laboratories, Astellas USA Foundation, Horizon Pharma, and VWR to offer a 5-day summer STEM camp for 3rd-8th grade girls!

Programming includes cool hands-on STEM activities, sessions with STEM professionals and field trips to local industry sites. Students will explore a wide range of careers STEM careers. On the last day of camp, parents are invited to join their children at camp for a picnic and barbecue to share in and celebrate their week of STEM exploration!

As a volunteer who works in a STEM industry, you will help in the facilitation of activities, talk about your career to give exposure to the variety within STEM fields, and engage with the girls. Here are the various volunteer engagement opportunities we are looking to fill:

  • Company/Organization STEM Activity helper - From 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Monday, June 18th, Tuesday, June 19th and Wednesday June 20th. Volunteers will help the girls problem solve as they work on their STEM activities. No prior experience required, no training required. Volunteers share their experiences in STEM as they work with the girls in teams. 25 volunteers needed each day.

  • Lunch Assistant (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) - This volunteer opportunity is for those interested in assisting with the distribution of lunches, which offers a great opportunity to engage with the campers on a more informal level. The time commitment for this activity is 1 hour (11:15 A.M. - 12:15 P.M.) on June 18, 19 and 20. 4 volunteers needed per day.

  • Field Trip Chaperone (Thursday) -- This volunteer opportunity is for those willing to accompany girls on their fields trips. The time commitment is 7 hours (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) on Thursday, June 21st. Volunteer chaperones ride on the bus with the girls and are responsible for keeping their groups together during the field trip and back on the bus home at the end of the day.
  • Before Camp Assistant - The camp will be offering before and after care every day. Early drop-off begins at 8:00 A.M. and camp activities do not begin until 9:00 A.M. During this time, volunteers can engage with the girls by playing games and doing activities. The games and activities will be provided. The minimum time commitment is 1 hour (8:00 A.M. - 9:00 A.M.) Monday through Friday (June 18th-22nd). 2 volunteers needed per day.

  • After Camp Assistant - The camp will be offering before and after care every day. Late pick-up is from 3:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M. During this time, volunteers can engage with the girls by playing games and doing activities. The games and activities will be provided. The minimum time commitment is 1 hour (3:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.) Monday through Wednesday. (June 18th-21st). 2 volunteers needed per day.

  • Company / Organization / Club] Booth Attendant - From 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. on Friday, June 22nd there will be an opportunity for interested companies, organizations and clubs to showcase who they are and what they do by having a booth at the STEM Fair. This is a great opportunity to engage with members of the community. The minimum time commitment for the Booth Attendant is two hours; maximum time commitment is four hours. 1 to 2 volunteers per company / organization / club (if divided into 2 hour shifts; 1 attendant per shift).
  • Lunch Assistant (Friday) - This volunteer opportunity is 11:15 A.M. - 12:15 P.M. on Friday, June 22nd. It is for those interested in assisting with the distribution of lunch, which offers a great opportunity to engage with the campers, their families, and other members of the community. The time commitment for this activity is 1.5 hours (12:00 P.M. - 1:30 P.M.) on the Family Day. 6 volunteers needed.

Description

The Stellar Girls program inspires young women to enter into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. Stellar Girls, developed by EDUCATE with funding from the Astellas USA Foundation, introduces girls in grades 3 through 8 to current, interesting, "Big Ideas" in STEM fields. Through weekly after-school program activities, girls explore how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are used to feed, fuel, heal and save the world. Girls engage in hands-on activities and have the opportunity to interact with STEM professionals and other volunteers to learn about STEM careers, apply STEM skills to real-world problems, and employ critical thinking skills through collaborative inquiry.
