Volunteers in the Read-Aloud program share the joy and excitement found in books with at-risk children. Volunteers bring books to life during one-hour Read-Alouds that engage children in books and hands-on activities. Commitment is one evening a month for a year.
Join at our Read-Aloud location at the YMCA Community Center at Northwest Park Apartments, next to the JoAnn Leleck Elementary School at Broad Acres. Read-Alouds are held on Thursdays during the school year from 5:30 to 6:30pm. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older. Qualifies for SSL hours.
Find more information online at http://thereadingconnection.org/volunteer/read-to-kids. Orientations are offered every 6 weeks.

Mission Statement
The Reading Connection improves the lives of at-risk kids and families in metro Washington, DC, by using the magic of books to inspire a passion to learn.
Description
The Reading Connection's programs start with the enjoyment kids and adults can have reading books aloud. That books can be fun may be a surprise to a kid who has never been read to outside of school and has no books of his own. The Reading Connection provides fun, reading experiences for at-risk kids and provides free books for kids to keep.
Volunteers also help with book mailing preparation, fundraising, special events, organizing book drives and website maintenance.
