SCOPE OF NEW ROOTS INTERN WORK: The New Roots intern reports directly to the New Roots Program Coordinator and supports efforts under IRC’s New Roots program. New Roots focuses on bringing refugees together to build connections with their new homes through nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and community gardening. New Roots is expanding its urban and community gardening program, which includes an active community garden at North Dekalb Mall. Programs for 2016 will include gardening & marketing classes, facilitation of a leadership committee, and a farm stand at North DeKalb Mall.
RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:
- Assist with design and implementation of educational programs and workshops at North DeKalb Mall Community Garden
- Assist with harvesting, washing, and selling at farm stand once a week
- Perform outdoor maintenance as needed
- Assist New Roots Program Coordinator with communication and event planning with committee of multi-lingual gardeners
- Assist with recruitment and management of volunteer groups
- Network with other DeKalb County community gardens to share resources and information
REQUIREMENTS:
- 1+ years experience in vegetable gardening (using sustainable methods preferred)
- Ability to work independently and take initiative
- Strong interest in working with international clients and proven ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences
- Reliable transportation
- Project management or community organizing skills a plus
- Burmese, Chin, or Nepali language ability a plus
HOURS:
- Interns must be able to work 15 hours a week
- Internship is from February/March to August/September; no exceptions
- Weekend hours will be required
