Next Step KC, Inc

Next Step KC and UWGKC partner every year to offer free tax preparation for low-income working individuals and seniors at Volunteer Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout Kansas City. Training is provided for all volunteer positions.

The key ingredient in Next Step KC's Tax Preparation Assistance program is the injection of a great number of volunteers who are willing to help in a variety of ways throughout the process. Opportunities include direct tax prep assistance, language interpretation, financial coaching, greeting/screening, and more. Time investments can range from just a few hours a month of indirect assistance to a weekly investment of direct help.

Tax season can be life-changing for these families, as the single check they receive through tax returns is often the largest windfall they see all year. With the guidance of Next Step KC, these families can invest this windfall in significantly improving their quality of life.

Mission Statement

The mission of Next Step KC is to offer financial products, educational opportunities, and services, including free tax preparation, which move people from financial dependency to independence and stability.

Description

Next Step KC is a community-based non-profit organization working to encourage affordable and appropriate financial services and products to low- to moderate-income families in the Kansas City area.

The organization was created in 2013 through the merger of three existing initiatives -- KC CASH Coalition ( free tax preparation), Fair Community Credit (s mall-dollar loan program) and Bank On Save Up ( financial education).

The merger was undertaken to support a broader, more effective, year-round program taking better advantage of staff, community opportunities and collective reach of the three initiatives.

The July 2013 merger created a single organization with a consolidated budget and a single board of directors.
