Do you enjoy history? Do you enjoy sharing it with others? Would you like to learn more about Wilmington’s history? You have found a perfect niche at the Latimer House in downtown Wilmington.
One of three Wilmington historic homes open for public tours, the Latimer House is fully furnished with period antiques and vintage clothing, offering a snapshot of life from the mid 19th century into the 20th century.
We have a variety of volunteer opportunities:
- House Tour Docents
- Walking Tour Guides
- Children’s Program Assistants
- Special Event Hosts and Hostesses
- Research Assistants
- Computer Technicians
- Garden Committee
We have individualized training programs for our docents and guides, and we are happy to work with your schedule - weekly, bi-weekly or occasionally. We hope you will share your interests and your skills!

Mission Statement
The Lower Cape Fear Historical Society, Inc. (LCFHS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the preservation and promotion of the history of the Lower Cape Fear region since 1956. The Society concentrates on preserving records and disseminating knowledge of local history.
Description
LCFHS has led the restoration and exhibition of the Latimer House, a noteworthy example of Victorian Italianate Revival architecture, since 1963. Within the walls of Latimer, LCFHS leads tours, educational programs and exhibits, and special events. The Latimer House is also home to our comprehensive collection of over 600 artifacts and an extensive archive and library. Since October 1957, LCFHS also publishes pathbreaking historical research in the LCFHS Bulletin.
