The Center for Independent Living (CIL) is seeking an intern for the marketing/development department. CIL is a private, non-profit organization promoting inclusion of people with disabilities by eliminating architectural, communication, and attitudinal barriers. CIL provides education, resources, and training to enhance self-determination. Within the development department, the intern candidate will have a direct impact on the funding and awareness of programs CIL offers to the Central Florida community. This opportunity will expose the intern candidate to marketing, communications, public relations, event planning, and fundraising. The perfect candidate will have an interest in nonprofit management, marketing or similar career fields. The intern would work on a team with two full time development staff and one director. This opportunity is at CIL’s Winter Park office located at 720 N. Denning Dr., Winter Park, FL 32789. The position is un-paid, and schedule can be flexible with a minimum of 20 hours per week.


  • Monitor all forms of media

  • Assist with customizing and then disseminating press releases to local and regional media outlets

  • Assist with mailings, print production, and online graphic design

  • Compile mail and invite lists

  • Conduct necessary donor research

  • Data entry: prior experience with Salesforce is a plus

  • Assist with planning and implementation of our 40th Anniversary Celebration which will take place April 14, 2016. This is a cocktail dinner style event with sponsorship, table sales, and a silent auction

  • Assist in recruiting volunteers for 40th Anniversary Celebration as well as other events as needed


  • Previous experience with event coordination and/or management

  • Ability to manage high-paced deadlines

  • Must have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a changing environment

  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and follow- up skills

  • Proactive problem prevention and issue resolution leadership ability

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and Outlook required as well as growing knowledge of online marketing tools such as social media, SEO, SEM

  • Ability to learn other software programs

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
