Making a Difference
Every Tuesday, volunteers tutor children from Anacostia one-on-one to help make a difference in their personal and academic lives.

Horton’s Kids seeks to empower at-risk children and prepare them for successful and healthy lives through educational opportunities and comprehensive programs tailored to their needs. Serving 500 children in grades K-12, Horton’s Kids provides children with year-round programs focused on three areas: academic supports, enrichment opportunities, and health and basic needs.

On Wednesday evenings, from September to June, Horton's Kids brings children from Anacostia's Wellington Park to the Department of Education for one-on-one tutoring by great volunteers from all over the DC area. Volunteers can make a full-time commitment to tutoring a single child once a week from 5:00-6:00 pm. We are looking for tutors to help the children complete homework and work on literacy skills through guided activities who can commit for one full school year from September - June.

Mission Statement

Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in one of DC’s most violent, under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We serve 500 children in grades K-12 living in Wellington Park, a neighborhood where 80 percent of adults don’t have a high school diploma and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed volunteers, Horton’s Kids’ goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports. Our impact is dramatic: in fact, children in Horton’s Kids are twice as likely to graduate from high school.

Description

Horton’s Kids empowers children living in one of Washington, DC’s most under-resourced communities so that they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. We are a community-based organization that serves 500 children, grades K through 12. , living in an isolated neighborhood called Wellington Park in Washington, DC’s Ward 8. The children we serve live in a community with one of the highest rates of violent crime in DC, where the average family income is less than $10,000 per year. Horton's Kids operates a safe and welcoming Community Resource Center just steps from where the children live. In our 28-year history, we’ve shown enormous outcomes: the high school graduation rate for Horton’s Kids participants is nearly twice the neighborhood average.

Activities center on traditional tutoring and mentoring activities, ensuring fundamental needs are met such as adequate health care, food and clothing, serving as advocates for the children in the school system and other settings, and offering activities and challenging opportunities to enhance the childrens' education, expand their minds and expose them to the possibilities of a wider world.
