STEM Mentoring

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa is currently seeking community volunteers to serve as mentors in a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program for 2nd-5th grade members at the Frank J. Ross Boys & Girls Club at Moore Elementary. The program will run once a week, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursdays. We’re looking for volunteers who will be able to commit to volunteering consistently with the program, would enjoy working with kids, and are interested in contributing to their community. Mentors will receive curriculum prior to sessions and will have all materials available for the session. Mentor/mentee teams will be exploring, experimenting and discovering STEM through hands on, real life experiences. Units include water and aquatic wildlife, moon and space as well as others. Volunteers should be prepared to get a little dirty and have a lot of fun.

Description

For the past 50 years, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa has provided kids and teens with research-based programs that focus on education, healthy lifestyles, and character and leadership development. Today, we serve more than 2,000 central Iowa youth ages 5-18 from 44 local schools each year (500 kids a day). We offer hands-on educational and experiential enrichment every day after school, as well as all-day programming during the summer and other breaks. The Club is a safe setting where youth can participate in both supervised and self-directed activities designed to give them the developmental assets necessary in becoming successful adults. Homework help, leadership opportunities, computer access, and a plethora of age-appropriate activities are offered at Club every day. Our youth development strategy is to instill a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging, and influence in the young people we serve. Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Iowa offers programs in five core areas:
