Under the direction of forest preserve staff, Natural Resource Stewards assume a leadership role in helping to restore biodiversity to natural areas identified in our management plan.
Duties include monitoring various site resources, controlling invasive species, removing brush, and the gathering, processing and planting of native seed. Natural Resource Stewards may organize workdays and recruit volunteer crews to assist in these efforts throughout the forest preserves.
A prospective steward is required to be an active R.E.A.P. workday volunteer who has earned a minimum level of conservation proficiency through hands-on field training and completion of a series of educational sessions before taking on this vital role.
Contact Kim O'Malley, Volunteer Coordinator, at (815) 877-6100 or e-mail komalley@winnebagoforest.org for more information.
