Community Center at Visitation

Community Center at Visitation offers free, day and evening classes for adults seeking to improve their English (speaking, reading, writing, and listening), Basic Literacy (phonics, basic spelling, and reading) and Naturalization Interview (American Civics, spoken and written English) skills. Each class takes a relaxed, community-minded approach that applies conversational English in ways that are relevant to daily life and employment.

We are looking for friendly, community-oriented volunteers to join in practice conversations and offer support during classes. This support helps each learner to explore the content more thoroughly and meet personal goals.

No prior experience is required. We ask that everyone joining our program bring a welcoming and supportive attitude towards community members of all lingual, cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Orientation and support will be provided throughout the volunteering process by our Adult Education Coordinator.

Types of Positions:

* Support Volunteers: Support the lead teacher by responding to student questions and joining in conversations and activities with learners.

* Lead Teaching Volunteers: Prepare lessons that address student needs and interests (materials and support provided). Lead teachers will take daily attendance, provide occasional assessments and share feedback with the Literacy and ESL Coordinator.

Time Commitment:

  • Classes typically run between 13 and 14 weeks.
  • Support Volunteers can commit to one or both days a class is held. Once a volunteer has been partnered with a class, they are expected to uphold their commitment through the end of the term.
  • Lead volunteers must commit to both days a class is held.

Classes Times:

  • AM English: Monday + Wednesday (9:00am-12:00pm)
  • Citizenship: Monday + Wednesday (12:30pm-2:30pm)
  • Basic Literacy: Tuesday + Thursday (9:00am-12:00pm)
  • PM English: Tuesday (6:00pm-8:30pm)

Qualifications:

All volunteers must...

  • Be age 18 or older and able to fluently read and write in English.
  • Have a willingness to collaborate with CCV staff and fellow teaching volunteers, listen and respond to student feedback and cultivate a welcoming space for learning.
  • Commit to consistent, punctual participation in the program. Volunteers are an integral part of our programming, and we rely on their participation to offer these classes.
  • Complete all required paperwork and background checks before volunteering.

Mission Statement

Our Mission Community Center at Visitation (CCV), guided by the strength and resilience of our neighbors, provides a welcoming community space for Kensington residents to build meaningful connections and access resources to improve the quality of life in the neighborhood. We do this by celebrating and growing the community through regularly scheduled events such as community dinners, holiday festivals and educational workshops. Through the input of our community, we offer quality resources such as healthy food, tutoring, professional development training and recreational activities. Lastly, we strive to collaborate with local partners to streamline access to and avoid duplication of services.

Description

The Community Center at Visitation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit located in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. We specialize in working together with our community in providing support and access to educational and social opportunities in addition to wellness programs and resources to promote a mentally and physically healthier population. Together, we will be able to provide the appropriate and necessary tools for our community so that we can collectively learn new skills that will improve our lives and the lives of others around us. In doing so, we believe that we will not only inspire positive change in the community, but that our collaborative efforts will bring a shared sense of respect, belonging, and love to Kensington: our home.
