Ada F. Addington Hospice CareCenterRush University Medical Ctr - Bowman Ctr - 5 South710 South Paulina StreetChicago, IL 60612

While working at the Ada F. Addington Hospice CareCenter, volunteers support patients, families and staff in an acute-care, fast-paced environment. This CareCenter is a partnership between JourneyCare and Rush University Medical Center and was the first inpatient hospice unit in Chicago. The unit is located on the fifth floor of the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center at Rush University Medical Center (710 South Paulina Street, Chicago). It has 13 private rooms with a dedicated hospice staff committed to providing expert, interdisciplinary care to make every patient feel at home. Unique and meaningful assignments include: Hospitality Volunteer, CNA Assist, Care Companion and Activity Volunteer

Volunteer in your community and set your own schedule! JourneyCare is looking for volunteers to serve at our Hospice CareCenter in Chicago.

This is a fast-paced, acute care setting and we offer several unique (and very meaningful!) roles for volunteers:

  • CNA Assist Volunteers are paired with a Certified Nursing Assistant and help with a patient's "activities of daily living," such as feeding, bathing, changing linens, etc. Specialized training is provided to help prepare volunteers to provide this tender care to our patients.
  • Hospitality Volunteers assist with clerical tasks at the nurses' desk, such as answering phones and call lights, faxing important documents, providing tours of the hospice unit, and so on.
  • Care Companions visit with patients and families and provide an extra layer of support through simple conversation, playing a game, watching television, etc. They also help with re-stocking and other light duties around the unit.
  • Activity Volunteers use their unique gifts (e.g., musicians or massage therapists) to support patients and families.

Each of these roles was intentially designed to meet true needs of our patients, families and staff members. The things our volunteers do are often quite simple, such as listening to a stressed family member or restocking the refrigerator in the family room, but the impact is truly tremendous! You will absolutely be a part of something so special each time you come in to volunteer.

Shifts are available every day of the week and typically last 3 hours. And you can volunteer on a regular schedule or sign up to help as your schedule allows.
