There are an estimated 2,300 kids in CT foster care right now. All varying in age, race, economic status, and ethnic background. The foster care system alone cannot always meet the unique needs of each youth in care. That’s why the Torrington Youth Service Bureau One to One Mentoring Program acts as an extra support to connect youth with an adult who they can build a relationship with.

Many youth in our mentoring program are living in nonrelative foster homes, sometimes surrounded by people who do not practice the same culture, identify with the same traditions, or speak the same language. In these instances youth often lose that part of themselves and their connection to cultural or religious traditions.

The Torrington Area Youth Service Bureau is seeking volunteers who practice and identify with a variety of different cultures, traditions, religions, etc. to be able to connect on a closer level with youth in foster care. Volunteers must be:

At least 21 years old

Have a valid drivers license

Be able to pass a background check

Have reliable transportation

Prepare to make a one year commitment

Be able to meet with youth at least 3 times a month

Volunteers are given the opportunity to make their own schedule, weekends, evenings, afternoons, etc. so it is perfect for working around a school or work schedule.
