Automotive skills have been a long-valued part of the work of our partner organization in India since its inception in 1964. However, the number of qualified automotive experts working with the organization has declined significantly. The Automotive Specialist Program will provide professional automotive repair and maintenance skills for the organization as an entity, and will also provide job skills training to Dalits and other poor, marginalized peoples as a means to provide them with marketable skills to earn an adequate income.

The Dalits, also known as the "untouchables" and "outcastes," make up nearly one quarter of India’s 1.2 billion society, with population estimates of 250 million people. The Dalits are history’s longest standing oppressed people group.

Qualified applicants will contribute in the following ways:

• Work with our partner headquarters team, learning about our work, culture, and the history of its vehicle use, the types of vehicles in India (2-wheeled, 4-wheeled), the maintenance and repair customs of the automotive industry in India. Further learn about Dalit, poor marginalized people, their economic needs, and how automotive repair skills can empower them to better livelihood.
• In cooperation with our partner leadership, develop an automotive skills training class that will be relevant to a wide variety of types of people (i.e., older teenage boys as technical education; church leaders needing a vocation; men coming out of addiction needing to earn an honest wage, etc.), and transferable to a variety of cultures within India. Document the curriculum, run pilot programs, make revisions and implement.
• Train Indian trainers/leaders to take over the automotive technician training program and implement it on a national and regional level as appropriate and directed by our partner leaders.
