Big Buddy Volunteers

Losing a loved one is devastating, especially for a child.

For over 20 years, children, ages 6 - 13, have come to Camp Nabi to learn that they are not alone and share their stories in a safe environment while enjoying fun camp activities, such as swimming and canoeing. The camp is staffed with professionals and each child is partnered with a Big Buddy, a trained volunteer. As children play and work together as a team, they explore loss, find strength and realize that with time and help they will make it through.

Hospice of the Chesapeake is a fully licensed, community-based non-profit organization. We provide services to terminally ill patients at the place that they call home - regardless of their age or ability to pay. In order to provide the best possible service to our patients and their families, Hospice of the Chesapeake depends on the generous support from the community, key business partners, and philanthropic operations to improve the quality of life for those in our community experiencing advanced illness or bereavement.

What Kind of Volunteering Would I Do?

Big Buddies spend the weekend with a camper, called Little Buddy. They share their heart and supportive presence during small group sessions as well as the traditional camp activities, such as playing games, swimming and making s’mores.

Support team members may help us prior to camp and during the camp weekend (not required to spend the night) with administrative functions and also prepping areas for the different camp activities. It takes a village to make camp run smoothly each year.

What Are The Benefits of Volunteering at HoC?

  • Helping a child in a lifelong way
  • Free training in a number of areas

  • Scholarships available for this and other Healing Arts certifications
