Adults are eager to learn! YOU can make a difference! No experience is required. Attend our free training.

Attend this orientation on Zoom and learn more about becoming an adult literacy tutor for the Library.
Change a life. Become a volunteer.

One-to-one tutoring for adults, 18 or older, who speak and understand English and read below an 8th grade level. You meet twice-a-week, 1.5 hours per session for a minimum commitment of 6 - 9 months.

The library is currently not open for in-person tutoring yet. When we are able to return to the library, Tutors and Learners meet twice a week at mutually convenient times any time the Central branch is open, including evenings and Saturdays: we will match you with someone who can come at the same times you can. All in person tutoring takes place at the Central Library at 110 N. Glenoaks in Burbank; however, with COVID, we have adapted to online tutoring with tutors and learners connecting through our BPL Literacy Zoom account. Meetings are still twice a week and are mutually arranged with your Learner.

Tutors must attend a three-session training workshop to be a volunteer: a two-hour overview, to see if the program is a good match for you, followed by a three hour training class of phonics and phonemic awareness plus a session to learn our curriculum and become familiar with tutoring methods and materials. The next workshop will be:

Wednesday, May 19, 2021 - 5:30 - 7:30PM - Live ZOOM - Program Overview: Is this for you?

Saturday, June 5, 2021 - 10:00AM - 4:00PM - Live ZOOM - Marianne Steverson -Phonics and Phonemic Awareness

Then, stay and learn to use our workbook curriculum. Learn about our other teaching materials, different learning styles, lesson plans, and other suggestions for successful tutoring.
