Assist staff as necessary in the management of the Emergency Department. Communication is key to both patients and their loved ones in the ED. Volunteers must understand the importance of communication and its role in the healing process. Always maintain a positive attitude, be on time, and accept direction from an ED nurse while in the department.
Greet and direct patients and visitors in the waiting room as well in the back treatment areas
Assist the staff in making the patients and their families more comfortable-always check with the nurses to see if the patient is NPO (no liquids or food) or if the patient wants a blanket (elevated temp, which in many cases means the patient cannot have a blanket)
Communicate with the assigned nurse if the patient is having pain (Nurses name will be on the white board in the patients room)
Provide support to the staff by assisting with patient discharge from the ED-can transport in a wheel chair to the Emergency Department exit.
Assisting staff by stocking various areas of the department, along with various procedure and room carts (pictures of what to stock are on each cart).
Assist staff in stripping and wiping down carts once patient is discharged or admitted. Use gloves at all times along with Sani-wipes to clean the carts.
Keep ED counters clean and tidy, checking them throughout the shift. Gloves, masks, and hand sanitizers may stay on the counter.
Once again, always ask the nurse before giving patient ice, water or food, as well as blankets. (Ensure the nurse gives permission to allow patients to ambulate to the bathroom.)
If a patient requests to leave before the results are back, inform the RN this is occurring.
