VOLUNTEER POSITIONS AVAILABLE

The LIU12 Franklin County Literacy Council is located in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. We are seeking in-person and virtual volunteers who are able to accommodate adult learner schedules during a variety of hours.

Volunteer Tutors:

Volunteer Tutors have the most rewarding experiences!
In order to comply with PA Department of Education requirements for adult education agencies, this volunteer position requires a High School Diploma and initial and ongoing training so that we can provide the best service for our students. Tutors should expect to spend approximately 1 -2 hours per week in lesson preparation and provide 3 hours of instruction per week (4-5 hours per week).

As the needs of our community change, the FCLC adjusts. As hybrid class formats become more popular, Tutors should expect to teach both in the virtual setting (via ZOOM) and in person. Some virtual-only tutors will continue to serve remotely. ZOOM Pro accounts are provided for tutors at no cost!

Training and support for ongoing changes is available and ongoing!

About LIU12 Franklin County Literacy Council

Location:

101 East King Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201, US

Mission Statement

The mission of the LIU12 Franklin County Literacy Council (FCLC) is to aid low literate adults in the development of basic reading, math and English language skills. We believe that lifting others through literacy benefits everyone! One in five of Franklin County residents can't read above an eighth grade level. Many also are learning English as a new language. This means that about 20% of our local population find it difficult to fill out a job application, help their children with homework, or read the directions on a medicine bottle. Low literacy levels place our region at greater risk for poverty, domestic abuse, poor health, and crime. By raising the literacy levels of adults, they will have greater opportunities for sustainable employment and higher educational and training options. Crime, recidivism, and poverty will be reduced and health and personal satisfaction will increase.

Description

The LIU12 Franklin County Literacy Council is a non-profit 501(C)(3) under the direction of the Lincoln Intermediate Unit 12 and is a community Program Partner of United Way of Franklin County. We have been serving Franklin County residents since 1985 by offering low literate adults the opportunity to increase their skills by providing tutoring groups and one on one pairs at no cost. Groups and pairs are instructed by well trained volunteers who have a passion for helping others reach their individual goals.
In addition to our services for enrolled students, we partner with other community organizations and companies to provide community seminars, workshops, and classes based on community needs we become aware of like: ESL Conversation workshops, Financial Literacy workshops, Tax Preparation Seminars, Google Applied Digital skills classes, and more. We also offer personalized on-site English language classes for local companies.

The staff and volunteers at FCLC are dedicated to lifting our communities through literacy. If you're interested in getting involved, contact us today!
