Peacock Acres is embarking on a new journey towards supporting the foster youth of Monterey County.

Now finally settled in our new building, the Therapeutic Learning Center is an even larger space that can adequately and effectively provide the environment conducive to the varied needs of our youth.

Through a program of creative arts and recreation enrichment (CARE), the intended goal of CARE is to stimulate interest in arts and wellness, self-reflection, creativity, curiosity, and connection, all are integral to a healthy self; enhance who they, the youth, are; encourage a sense of pride; teach outlets for dealing with challenges specific to foster youth.

But in trying to provide a therapeutic and transformative program, we need the support of the community to help realize our intended goal.

Whether it be leading and facilitating one of the themed workshops of the month or providing support to said workshops, we need your help.

Below is the list of planned workshops for the next academic year:

  1. Mandalas - demonstrating what mandalas are and relating their therapeutic value
  2. Mindfulness meditation
  3. Healthy eating - a workshop on proper diet, what food is, and why what we consume directly affects our health
  4. Poetry, song writing, stories - a workshop solely dedicated to self-expression in the written word
  5. Empathy and community - what is empathy? Look at paintings that elicit empathetic feelings
  6. Drawing - lead workshops on drawing on-site and off-site in relation to perspective
  7. Forgiveness boxes and dream catchers
  8. Forgiveness and moving forward - learning how to let go and trusting oneself through rock climbing
  9. Breathing techniques - Importance of oxygen flow in learning and growing and overcoming stress. A yoga instructor is ideal
  10. Movement - Connecting with nature; bike ride along coast; participating in the Sea Otter Classic is a goal
  11. Capture the moment - workshops on photography whether film, Polaroid, or digital.

Description

Peacock Acres provides supportive housing, intense case management, life coaching, and education for youth that have been separated from their families. Our mission is to steer these youth towards opportunities for personal growth as they continue their journey toward a happy, productive life. We envision Monterey County as a community where every youth in foster care is afforded the same opportunities and support as their peers. Peacock Acres currently operates five supportive programs: Therapeutic Group Homes for boys ages 7-17; Incarceration to Success (I2S) for boys ages 16-19; Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP) for foster teens ages 16-18; the Peacock Acres Transitional Housing program (PATH-Plus/ THP-Plus) for emancipated foster youth ages 18-24; and our newest project, The Learning Center at Peacock Acres which provides mentorship and tutoring services to students in foster care.

Peacock Acres’ original Group Home was founded and operated by Gene and Nancy Edgin. Nancy still plays an active role in providing mentorship and seeking out educational and vocational opportunities for our youth. Nancy’s son, Ernest Howard grew up in the Group Home with the foster youth who came to live with the family and now serves as Peacock Acres’ CEO and Executive Director. Ernest’s experience as a child growing up in a group home has given him expert knowledge of how best to work with youth in foster care and guide them towards safer, more fulfilling and more confident lives. Our Director of Programs, Steve Duran, has worked with Peacock Acres over the last 13 years. Despite his many responsibilities as Director of Programs and as a Peacock Acres House Parent, he is always available to provide one-on-one support to our youth and their case managers. Our lead staff share an innate instinct for working with foster youth in order to help them overcome past trauma so that they may take control of their lives and become confident, successful young adults.

Peacock Acres has provided residential foster care in Monterey County since 1983. We understand the life challenges faced by youth in foster care and over the years, our residential programs have expanded to meet the needs of transitional age youth, former foster youth, and foster youth on probation. Peacock Acres now houses between 40 and 45 clients at any given time in scattered-site housing in the Salinas area. In 2008, Peacock Acres PATH-Plus program received the "Highest Level of Satisfaction of Any Program" in California and in 2009, Peacock Acres received the "Heart for Kids" award from Mbaykids.com. In 2011, Peacock Acres served 83 foster and probationary youth in Monterey County.
