Community Advocate

24 hr. services 10 volunteers for the house

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin is seeking volunteers to serve as Community Advocates to work in the emergency shelter. Availability on weekdays, weekends, and holidays is desired, but we can work with your scheduling preferences. Responsibilities include providing crisis intervention and advocacy services. The Community Advocate position is responsible for providing support and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence and their children, including assisting shelter residents with daily living needs, providing empathetic listening, emotional support, safety planning and resources. The Community Advocate position is an awake position that ensures coverage of the shelter 24/7.

A successful candidate will have experience in providing support and advocacy to people in crisis. Experience working specifically with survivors of domestic violence and their children and experience in a residential setting is strongly preferred. Additionally, the preferred candidate will have a four-year degree in human services related field although relative experience may be substituted for a degree. Background check required.
