Prairietown youth
A youth volunteer in historic 1836 costume helps a guest make a flower chain. Leading the public in hands-on activities is a big part of the program.

Conner Prairie is a history museum in Fishers, Indiana. Our Youth Volunteer Program teaches youth history in a hands-on immersion environment, making learning painless, personal, and fun. Youth volunteer in both historic costume and modern clothes in areas of our historic grounds such as 1836 Prairietown, 1816 Lenape Camp, Animal Encounters Barn, 1863 Civil War Journey, Textiles, and special events. If you enjoy leading activities, history, science, people, public speaking, and don’t mind a little old-fashioned sweat and hard work, this program may be for you! Open to youth ages 10-18. Volunteer term lasts at least one year with a minimum of 120 hours required. We are most active in the spring, summer, and fall.

Application process is extensive. The applications for the 2023 season can be found online at https://www.connerprairie.org/support/get-involved/youth-volunteer/ and are due January 6, 2023.

Please reach out to YouthVolunteers@connerprairie.org with questions.

Mission Statement

Conner Prairie's mission is to inspire curiosity and foster learning about Indiana's past by providing engaging, individualized and unique experiences.

Description

At Conner Prairie, the Smithsonian Museum Institution's only Indiana affiliate, you'll find that "Look, don't touch" becomes "look, touch, smell, taste and hear." As you explore five themed historic areas on 200 beautiful, wooded acres, you'll discover more exciting, memorable ways to experience the past than your family or group can pack into a day.

Recognized by the American Association of Museums as a national leader in quality learning, Conner Prairie offers classic, everyday fun in addition to special events, classes and other activities. Whether you're five or 75, discover a new historic adventure each time you visit Conner Prairie.

During the days from April through October, you'll take in the hustle and bustle of pioneer Indiana, jump in and help with chores in a Victorian farm community or hold newly hatched chicks at the Conner Homestead. Throw tomahawks in an Indian trading post and feel the thrill of soaring 350 feet above Conner Prairie's landscape in our newest historic area, 1859 Balloon Voyage.
