The 2018 hurricane season has been extraordinarily active in parts of the U.S., with Hurricane Florence currently impacting millions in the Carolinas. As this natural disaster unfolds, the staff here at VolunteerMatch is doing its part to ensure that, if you are in an affected community, you are prepared and safe. And if you are looking to help with disaster relief efforts, you know about the most effective ways to contribute.
What happens when social convening converges with artistic performance? You get a fabulously rich and transformative experience of people, culture, and place. At the Red Poppy Art House, we produce 140 such events annually, and we’re always looking for people to come out once or twice a month to assist. Volunteering even just once a month wins you free access to all the performances throughout the year.
Volunteer shifts include helping to set up the performance space, engaging with guests and community members, and then occupying one of two roles: handling admissions at the door (and welcoming guests as they arrive), or concessions at the counter. Each night requires two volunteers (sign up with a friend?) that join with two Poppy hosts that, together, serve to transform an ordinary evening into a spontaneous present-time exchange between artists and community/audience members. In the process, you might find your own social-cultural horizon expanding!
