Tutor training is interactive & fun!

Looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity? Become an English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) tutor! Help an adult improve their English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SPEAK A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO BE AN ESL TUTOR! Training, study materials, and on-going support provided. Tutors make a volunteer commitment of two hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. Tutors can meet with their student at any public place (library, coffee shop, senior center, etc.) at a time convenient to them.

Incoming tutors must attend a free, full-day tutor training session provided by the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. After training, tutors are matched with an adult student. The student-tutor team maps out specific short- and long-term goals set by the student; student goals might include attaining a High School Equivalency certification; becoming a citizen; filling out medical paperwork, communicating with doctors, or other health-related goals; communicating with children's teachers, etc. The Rio Arriba Adult Literacy Program (RAALP) provides, books and learning materials, and on-going support for tutors and tutor-student pairs.
