ORGANIZATION: Village Harvest

Volunteer Harvesters

Village Harvest helps people share their gardens and their talents to build a stronger, healthier community for all. Together, we fight hunger and improve lives with local fruit and community spirit, and have fun doing it!

We organize volunteers to pick abundant fruit from from backyards and small orchards in the South San Francisco Bay Area to help people in need. This year a thousand volunteers will harvest more than 200,000 pounds of healthy, local, sustainable fruit.

The talents of our Harvest Organizers / Event Planners make all this possible; a few hours of your time organizing a community fruit harvest from home can make a difference for thousands. This volunteer role requires an ongoing commitment of a 4 to 6 hours each month.

For other volunteer opportunities including participating in our harvests, please visit www.villageharvest.org and sign up through the Events calendar.

Harvest Organizers decide which homes to harvest and coordinate arrangements with homeowners, food agencies, and volunteer harvest leaders. Volunteering is from home (or a remote location) using your computer and Internet connection, on a generally flexible schedule in advance of each harvest. Participating in harvests is not required.

Volunteer openings are available for 6 community harvest teams serving areas of Santa Clara, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties. Learn more at www.villageharvest.org

Mission Statement

Sharing our gardens and talents to strengthen our community: Village Harvest brings together neighbors and community organizations to provide food for people in need, promote sustainable use of urban resources, and preserve our agricultural heritage and skills.

Description

Village Harvest is a volunteer organization in the San Francisco Bay Area that harvests fruit from homes and small orchards for local food agencies to assist people in need. We also provide education on fruit tree care, harvesting, and food preservation.

Since our founding in 2001 volunteers have picked and donated more than 4 million pounds to assist hundreds of thousands. Instead of going to waste abundant fruit becomes healthy food, and our volunteer harvests provide important life experiences for children and families, assistance for seniors, and community connection for a greater good.
