Historic World War II Liberty Ship needs a comptroller

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: SS Jeremiah O'Brien

  • 4 people are interested

The Jeremiah O'Brien is a World War II Liberty (cargo) ship built in 1943 and still steaming! The ship was part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy and sailed from San Francisco to France to participate in the 50th anniversary of D-Day. When not steaming, she is moored at Pier 45 in Fisherman's Wharf and is open to the public.

The ship is owned and operated by the National Liberty Ship Memorial, Inc., a non-profit corporation, and manned by about 175 volunteers. Operating personnel in the deck department and engine room are licensed by the US Coast Guard.

We are seeking a volunteer comptroller/treasurer to oversee accounting, budget, and financial reporting for the NSLM. Our small paid staff includes a part-time bookkeeper.

Mission Statement

The mission of the National Liberty Ship Memorial is to restore, promote and operate the LIBERTY Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien as a living museum. The goal of this mission is to preserve, for present and future generations, the story of the patriotic and brave men and women who built, sailed and defended the 2,751 American-built World War II ships known as "Liberties".

Description

The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of only two surviving operational Liberty ships of 2710 ships of this class that were built. Liberty ships, along with similar Canadian and British ships, were the mainstay of the Allied logistic effort during W.W.II. Without the military and civilian cargos delivered by these ships, victory would not have been achieved. A national treasure, the O'Brien serves as a living memorial to the men and women who built, supplied, and sailed Liberty ships.
