Mentors are welcome to Study Skills class at Venado Middle School in Irvine. Venado is a public middle school in the Irvine Unified School District. Study Skills class is an elective class with focus on goal setting, time management, and growth mindset strategies, as well homework completion and test preparation.

What to expect:

  • Mentors are matched into small groups with 7th and/or 8th grade students to engage students to set and reach positive academic, career and personal goals. They assist students to complete homework and prepare for upcoming assessments under the guidance of a Certificated teacher and an Instructional Assistant, who are present at all times.
  • Study Skills class is offered 4 different periods and is open to mentors Tuesday - Friday.
  • Mentors will receive 20 minute training to be ready to join a classroom.
  • The preferred commitment is 1 or 2 periods (80 minutes each) a week.
  • Mentors are required to be fully vaccinated and wear a mask.

Mission Statement

The CalPREP program at Vendao Middle School is in need of volunteers to mentor 7th and 8th grade students who are struggling in school. The mentoring will take place in an after school program designed to help these students foster a positive mindset towards study skills and work habits. A key focus of the program is to introduce students to college information. All volunteers will be trained and will be equipped with supplies needed to be a successful mentor. This is a great opportunity to step into a leader role and have a great impact on struggling youth.
