It is a magic moment, when a DESC client is first handed the keys to their new home. After years of homelessness and huge barriers that include mental and addictive illness, this is the moment when each new resident fully understands that they have their own bed, their own bathroom and kitchen, and a key that locks the door. Finally, their own world, for as long as they wish. North 96th Street Supportive Housing is planned to open March 2019, providing 100 clients with the only real answer to homelessness. A home.
DESC and funding resources provide each apartment with a bed, table and two chairs, as well as a dresser. The apartment has a closet, bathroom and full kitchen. But imagine the new resident walking into their apartment with a backpack. Of course, they don't have sheets, blankets, kitchen and bathroom items. They still need these things to be a successful tenant. This is where we ask for your help.
We are looking for people who will adopt one or more apartments
and provide the basic items. When a new building first opens we have an apartment adoption day where you and your family, group, club, etc., can come and dress the apartment, making it even more welcoming to the new resident.
Adopting an apartment costs about $200, though some people spend more, which is great. Your $200 goes toward buying everything a new resident would need including
bedding, kitchen supplies, bathroom items, etc. Even better, we buy the items for you, getting the most of your contribution, and ensuring everyone has a brand new set of items to make their apartment feel like home.
Please consider adopting one or more apartments, and better yet, approach your group to adopt a grouping of apartments. Apartment adoption day is really fun, with groups (including youth) flooding the building, making beds, setting tables, hanging shower curtains. It's unforgettable! We end the day with cake and ice cream, celebrating that, within a few days, clients will start moving in.
